Formed in 1928, the Southern Minnesota High
School Conference was quickly dubbed the "Big 8" for the eight original
members. The schools represented included Albert Lea, Austin,
Faribault, Mankato, Owatonna, Red Wing, Rochester, and Winona. Many
changes have occurred since that time. Northfield joined the
conference in 1934 and remained there for over three decades before
leaving following the 1967 season. Rochester Mayo opened its doors
in the fall of 1966 and Mankato East joined in 1974. Original member
Red Wing left the conference following the 1981 season. The latest
addition to the Big 9 was Rochester Century, who joined in 1998.
Although the number of teams in the conference has varied over the years
and now stands at ten, the Southern Minnesota High School Conference will
always be affectionately known as the "BIG 9". |
